Departments - ELD
Assessment is used to determine a student’s appropriate ELD level. ELPAC results—Initial ELPAC or Summative ELPAC—are the primary determinants for student placement, though other criteria may be consulted. Students scoring Level One, Level Two, Level Three, or Level Four on the ELPAC are placed in corresponding ELD classes.
ELD Two and ELD Three count as English credit toward graduation; the UC and CSU systems accept ELD Three as college prep English credit. ELD Four is counted toward elective credit toward graduation.
ELD classes assist EL students in acquiring and developing English. Continuing students advance through ELD class levels at the beginning of each school year; progression to subsequent ELD classes is based on spring ELPAC scores. ELD also provides an introduction to and understanding of the school system and culture. While summer English language-enrichment courses may be offered, ELD classes are not offered in the condensed summer school model.
